The Authentic Leader

Most people think of leadership as a position and therefore don’t see themselves as leaders. Covey

What first separates a leader from a normal human being? A leader knows who they are as a human being. Stan Slap

Because Instant Teamwork specialise in creating high-performing, engaged teams, we have also immersed ourselves in Leadership and what it means, how it shows up. Teams need to be led. However, personal leadership has nothing to do with leading a team – it is more a question of how we lead ourselves. Anyone can display sterling personal leadership – no matter where they are in the hierarchy.

Ask us about our bespoke Personal Leadership days – we’d love to talk to you.

The key to developing personal leadership is self-awareness – literally becoming more conscious of ourselves, who we are, how we behave, what our values are, and what we do and say that are out of alignment with them. This is true whether we lead other people or not.

Leadership begins with what the Leader must BE, the values and attributes that shape the leader’s character…. Leadership is a matter of how to BE, not how to DO. Be-Know-Do: Leadership the Army way

We introduce techniques to enable people to become more honest with themselves, to examine strengths and weaknesses with scientific objectivity, in a spirit of curiosity. We explore the mask, the ‘professional’, work face that many adopt and look at the causes and impacts of authenticity, and its absence.

The power and congruency of our personal leadership is not created by situations, but by our ability to respond to them with self-awareness. Our minds create fears and impose limitations on us that can be identified and challenged. We are often afraid to take decisive action for fear of the consequences, or what people might think of us. However, we can learn to develop the confidence and courage to make choices that advance us along our career or life path, as well as the flexibility to change course when the obstacles are real.

Sessions are inductive and experiential and include practical exercises to embed and fast-track learning. Depending on the level and requirements of the group, sessions may include:

  • Personal leadership and what that means
  • Differentiating between leadership and management skills
  • Differentiating between leadership styles
  • How attitude informs behaviour and the impacts
  • Overcoming limiting beliefs that hold us back
  • Developing a clear vision and purpose for the future
  • Differentiating between leadership and management skills
  • Effective communication and listening
  • How to lead others and inspire emotional loyalty.

You can’t elevate others to higher purposes until you’ve first elevated yourself….You can’t lead others until you’ve first led yourself through a struggle with opposing values….A leader with integrity has one self, at home and at work, with family and with colleagues. Such a leader has a unifying set of values that guide choices of action regardless of the situation. Posner
